Solutions for Bio-Based Packaging Promising new uses for bio-based materials like polylactic acid (PLA), cellulose and starch-based renewable bio-degradable films will help the packaging industry in Europe make important progress towards green packaging which reduces food waste and more broadly, the environmental impact of packaging.
Using bio-based materials however presents unique challenges for packaging construction. Dow has devoted significant development efforts to identify adhesive solutions for bio-based packaging and products. These are now available using the company’s ADCOTE™ and MOR-FREE™ technologies. The bio-film structures built with these new adhesive systems meet most of the current performance requirements for dry food, meat, cheese and even chemically aggressive content like coffee. Dow also markets a line of PLA additives that improve impact resistance, reduce production and equipment difficulties, and enable higher melt strength and line speeds to make these materials better performing. The company’s PARALOID™ BPM 500 for increasing melt elasticity and strength impact modifier and PARALOID™ BPMS-250 additive have proven to be major advancements that enable bio-plastics to compete head to head in performance with traditional thermoplastics.
