Originally a farm, Rohm and Haas purchased the land from Charles Collum in 1961. Rohm and Haas opened the Spring House site just two years later on September 3, 1963. There were three new structures built on the 140-acre tract, including the powerhouse, Building 2, and Building 3A, and there were 325 employees on site.
Today the site features the site features 11 buildings, plus the McKean Road farm, housing approximately 900 employees.
The Spring House facility is the headquarters of the company's Research and Development function. Every day, scientists at this site work to invent products that make your life better. Over the years, we've invented the acrylic technology behind high-quality acrylic latex paints; PVC impact modifiers; water purification products; polymers that make your laundry detergents work better, and make your cosmetic products, including shampoos, lotions, and conditioners work better. The site is also host to the company's Paint Quality Institute. Here, the company maintains a paint exposure station which helps our customers develop high-quality paints that are easy to apply, stand up in harsh weather conditions and are better for the environment. The exposure panes give us and our customers an accurate picture of how coatings behave on different surfaces under various weather conditions.
