The term "Responsible Care®" refers to the American Chemistry Council's (ACC) program to ensure that chemical products are manufactured and used safely. As a member of ACC and in accord with the product stewardship code of Responsible Care, Rohm and Haas Company and the Bristol Complex recognizes that it retains some obligation for its products even after they have been sold. Fundamentally, Responsible Care is both an affirmation of ACC member firms' commitment to protect both individuals and the environment from any dangers associated with their operations and a promise to improve their efforts in this area. Many firms already practice most or all of the elements of Responsible Care. Formally establishing the initiative, however, communicates the industry's efforts in these areas to the public. Moreover, by endorsing the initiative, chemical manufacturers strengthen their commitment to its principles.
