Risk Assessment and Management
The chemical industry has a celebrated
history of creating products and technology
that improve the quality of life for people
around the world. It is the industry’s responsibility, however, to confirm that today’s
progress does not adversely impact the environment
or the health and well-being of current and
future generations. At Rohm and Haas Company,
we have more than 95 years of experience inventing
and producing products that improve the quality
of life. Of particular note is our acrylic
polymer technology that has enabled generations
of less environmentally-friendly coatings and
related products to be replaced with water-based,
more consumer and environmentally appealing
products. We have the distinction of being
the recipient of two Green Chemistry Awards
from the United States Environmental Protection
Agency.

At Rohm and Haas, our approach to Risk Assessment
and Management is rooted in a commitment to
the guiding principles of Responsible Care® in
the worldwide operation of our facilities and
the lifetime management of the chemicals we
manufacture. Through those principles, we strive
to achieve a vision of no accidents, injuries
or harm to the environment, while developing
and producing technology that increasingly
benefits society and the economy.
The Risk Assessment and Management process
associated with our products starts long before
commercialization begins. Extensive analysis
and modeling is conducted for our product formulations
to identify, assess and minimize potential
hazards during production, transport, application
and eventual disposal. Once commercialization
is approved, testing and risk assessment for
the product continues in order to evaluate
and take steps to minimize its impact on individuals’ health
and the environment.
The process does not end once a product has
reached the marketplace. Rohm and Haas evaluates
the long-term impact of products and actively
participates in the High Production Volume
test programs, adult and lifetime exposure
studies and children’s testing initiatives
in partnership with the American Chemistry
Council, the USEPA and other regulatory and
oversight agencies. We use the information
derived from these efforts to mitigate long-term
health impacts of our products.
