North American Education Programs
Rohm and Haas supports a number of educational programs – particularly in the areas of math and science – that advance the Company’s objective of inspiring youth to nurture their understanding, knowledge and desire for further inquiry. Rohm and Haas partners with the following programs in its host communities.
Camp/Club Invention™
Camp Invention is a one-week day camp held during the summer months. Club Invention is an after-school enrichment program for children entering grades 2-6. Both programs are hosted by schools and community centers across the United States. At Camp and Club Invention programs, children think the unthinkable, create new possibilities and discover innovative solutions through hands-on learning to promote rich content and application skills needed to apply science and math principles.
Philadelphia Academies Philadelphia Academies, Inc. is a non-profit organization that expands life and economic options for Philadelphia public school students through career-focused programming that prepares young people for employment and post-secondary education. The Academies’ programs include process technology, mechanical science, and environmental technology. 6,500 students are served from grades 10 to 12.
GPUAC Philadelphia Reads (SWARM)
SWARM (Science, Writing, Arts, Reading and Music) serves children in 1st through 3rd grades and provides enrichment for crucial academic areas. It also promotes best practices pertaining to literacy efforts in Philadelphia’s neediest communities. Rohm and Haas funding additionally helps to obtain science kits used during instructional sessions.
Franklin Institute (PACTS)
The Franklin Institute’s Partnerships for Achieving Careers in Technology and Science (PACTS) inspires and supports at-risk urban youth to engage in science and technology learning. Professional mentors work with students and are involved in hands on activities to strengthen their understanding of this career opportunity.
FIRST
FIRST ( For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) inspires young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, inspire innovation, and foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication and leadership.
Bucks County Community College
Rohm and Haas is the signature sponsor of the development of two new, state-of-the-art community centers at the Lower Bucks Campus in Bristol, Pa. In addition to being a central meeting place for students and members of the community, the rooms can be divided into two separate classrooms that hold up to 60 guests each. The rooms are equipped with Smartboards, projectors and electronic teaching stations.
National Inventors Hall of Fame (Club & Camp Invention) Camp Invention is a one-week day camp held during the summer months. Club Invention is an after-school enrichment program for children entering grades 2-6. Both programs are hosted by schools and community centers across the United States. At Camp and Club Invention programs, children think the unthinkable, create new possibilities and discover innovative solutions through hands-on learning to promote rich content and application skills needed to apply science and math principles. Through Rohm and Haas contributions, over 100 Camp Invention programs and 40 clubs have operated by offering student scholarships for participation.
Delaware Valley Science Fairs
DVSF brings parents, teachers, and industry together to stimulate and nurture young people so that they grow and develop into contributing members of the community. The fairs provide a forum for students to present their scientific work and interact with scientists in their field to receive feedback on their efforts. Students are awarded, scholarships, cash prizes, and other non-monetary recognition for outstanding work. DVSF also provides mentoring and teacher training to facilitate participation in this activity. Employee volunteers assist with program demonstration and judging.
Congreso De Latinos Unidos Inc
Congreso is a nationally recognized, community based non-profit organization that primarily serves the neighborhoods of Eastern North Philadelphia where the majority of the city's Latino population resides. Congreso's mission is to strengthen Latino communities through social, economic, education, and health services; leadership development; and advocacy. Rohm and Haas’s contributions specifically impact the Philadelphia Freedom School’s mathematics curriculum program. Funds are used to purchase books training, and food for the program.
Philadelphia Education Fund
The Philadelphia Education Fund (The Ed Fund), an independent non-profit organization, has been working to improve the educational achievement of underserved youth in the Philadelphia region for the past two decades. Rohm and Haas funding has resulted in new approaches to preparing youth to excel in math and science and recruiting teachers in these vital areas.
Junior Achievement
Junior Achievement is passionate people inspiring kids to learn the economics of life through free enterprise education. JA enables caring business professionals to share their experience with students to show them what it takes to be successful. Junior Achievement reaches approximately 5.2 million students worldwide through age-appropriate curricula beginning at the elementary school level, teaching children how they can impact the world around them as individuals, workers and consumers. Junior Achievement programs continue through the middle and high school grades, preparing students for future economic and workforce issues they'll face.
Science Teacher Institute
Each summer since 1990, middle and high school science teachers from across Texas attend the Science Teacher Institute program at the University of Houston, to learn about chemicals and the environment. Rohm and Haas Texas, Inc. works with the Texas Chemical Council and the Association of Chemical Industry of Texas as a key sponsor of the Institute.
At the Science Teacher Institute, experts from the environmental industry provide classroom instruction. Teacher participants earn 3 hours of graduate credit and 45 hours of staff development credit in environmental education. Field trips and panel discussions support their instruction, to provide teachers with the tools and resources they need to teach Texas students to become more responsible citizen.
Fine Arts Award
In 1980, a Fine Arts Achievement Award was established by Rohm and Haas Company to recognize and encourage the developing generation of Philadelphia’s fine artists annually. This $1,000 award is provided to a student at each of our four Philadelphia institutions in recognition of outstanding work displayed at the spring exhibition. The selected art works, which are determined by a jury, become part of the Rohm and Haas Company’s collection that is displayed at Rohm and Haas locations worldwide.

American Institute of Chemical Engineers Safety Certificate
SACHE (Safety and Chemical Engineering Education) offers a wealth of on-line products designed to assist faculty and independent-study students who want to add safety elements to their curriculum. Beyond the chemical industry, SACHE targets the pharmaceutical, petroleum, biological, and microchip industries. Materials are developed by industry experts to ensure that the concepts have relevant applications in the professional sector. In 2007, Rohm and Haas awarded grants to expand the availability of the program as well as a new Safety Certificate.
Drexel Minority Scholarship
The Rohm and Haas Minority Scholars Program at Drexel University launched in 2003 recognizes potential and rewards the achievements of minority students. Through their partnership, Rohm and Haas and Drexel University to encourage and increase the number of minority students who enter the fields of chemical or mechanical engineering. In addition to the $10,000 award, which is spread throughout the balance of the selected student’s term, Rohm and Haas provides the student with an opportunity to work as a co-op at one of Rohm and Haas’s locations as well as providing an employee mentor to assist in furthering their goals.
LEAD
Leadership Education and Development Program in Business, Inc., LEAD, has encouraged academically gifted African American, Hispanic and Native American high school juniors to pursue careers in business for nearly 25 years. For more than 15 years, Rohm and Haas has supported this program by financially sponsoring students who pursue careers in chemical engineering.
Scholarships Rohm and Haas supports a number of educational scholarships for children of employees including those provided through membership in various associations such as the Consumer Specialty Products Association, the International Sanitary Supply Association, and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
