Global Giving in the European Region (ER)
The European Region’s contributions—financial and otherwise—support social welfare in regions and companies that are still developing, and educational excellence in more industrialized areas.

Small Business Incubation: Golden Spot Cleaning Company
Office cleaning services and preparation of customer samples at the Rohm and Haas facility in New Germany, South Africa were once provided by employees. When a change in policy stipulated the services be contracted externally, Rohm and Haas personnel targeted a group of women from a previously disadvantaged population and helped them establish their own cleaning company—Golden Spot. For the first six months, Rohm and Haas supplied Golden Spot with all of its consumables, but today the young business sustains itself to conduct all cleaning and general maintenance at the New Germany facility, as well as packaging and labeling of product samples for customers.

Heifer International
In conjunction with Heifer International, the Rohm and Haas facility in New Germany, South Africa is working to end hunger and poverty, and care for the earth by providing appropriate livestock, training and related services to small-scale farmers in its host community. The New Germany plant recently sponsored the purchase of chickens for a local farmer; Heifer International then stepped in to provide the appropriate training for the new owners to care for and breed their new livestock. The training supports sustainable farming techniques: breeding generates new offspring, animal droppings function as fertilizer for better crop sustenance, and eggs provide a vital source of food and income. The new chicken farmers are obligated to give a specified number of their livestock back to the Heifer International Project, which are then presented to another family in need to promote sustainability and self-sufficiency, build community, and enhance individual dignity and participation in the project.

Teaching aids/supplies donations
As the principal company in its host community, the Rohm and Haas facility in Lauterbourg has maintained a partnership with the College Georges Holderith de Lauterbourg for some 15 years. Discussion about company operations, the chemistry trades and their role in modern life are conducted during student and faculty site visits, as well as employee visits to the school. The Lauterbourg facility also presents a financial gift to help the College equip its chemistry labs and classrooms.

Mathematiques sans Frontieres
The Rohm and Haas facility in Lauterbourg is a financial supporter of Mathematics Without Borders (Mathematiques sans Frontieres), an annual European and Mediterranean mathematics rally open to whole classes of third- and second-level students in France, and equivalent-level students in other countries.

Les Olympiades Internationales de Chimie
The Rohm and Haas facility in Lauterbourg is a financial supporter of Les Olympiades Internationales de Chimie, an annual, high-level international competition, which brings together students of approximately 50 countries, united by a common passion: chemistry. Candidates are pupils in their first year of the scientific preparatory classes and undergo a rigorous selection process to participate in the 10-day experience, filled with scientific competition and cultural experiences.

Chimie la Classe
Through financial contributions made by the Lauterbourg facility since 1994, Rohm and Haas is one of 25 companies that supports Chimie la Classe, a national educational program in France organized by the chemical industry. Its goal is to illustrate the role of chemistry in daily life for students at the CM1 and CM2 level. Since its inception, Chimie la Classe has grown to provide 60,000 classes with teaching materials that address chemistry in the house, agriculture, the environment and health.

Tycho Brahe Cultural and Educational Centre
With a donation of 50,000 SEK (~$7,000 USD), the Rohm and Haas facility in Landskrona, Sweden provided major support for the development of an educational and cultural centre to commemorate the work of 16th-century astronomer Tycho Brahe. Located on the island of Ven in southern Sweden, where Brahe worked and lived for 20 years, the centre is expected to attract several thousand visitors each year. An exposition about the project is also planned to travel to various countries within the European Union.

Tyneside Training and Enterprise Council Award
For several years, the Rohm and Haas Jarrow facility has sponsored an award for presentation to a student entrant at the Tyneside Training and Enterprise Council Science and Technology Fair. Student winners are at Key Stage 4 of their education (aged 14-15 years old).

Local sporting sponsorships
Financial contributions to regional and community sporting organizations and events is an important part of the Company’s giving program. In Landskrona, Sweden, Rohm and Haas supports Landskrona Bois, one of the nation’s first-division soccer teams; Friskis & Svettis, one of Sweden’s largest non-profit sports organizations; and several community-based soccer and miniature golf clubs, of which Rohm and Haas Landskrona employees or their families are members. In the United Kingdom, the Rohm and Haas Jarrow facility underwrites the cost of trophies for Junior football tournaments.

Seasonal donations
Driven by an employee volunteer’s commitment to the cause, the Rohm and Haas Jarrow facility donates £100 to a summer camp program for underprivileged youngsters, organized by the St. Vincent de Paul Society. The donation is used to purchase recreational equipment for the children. In Germany, in lieu of winter holiday cards for its customers, Rohm and Haas subsidiary CMP Technologies began making financial contributions to charitable organizations that serve children, including a local cancer fund and UNICEF.
