Global Giving in the Asia Pacific Region (APR)
Around the world, Rohm and Haas contributions support the company’s commitment to education, the environment and sustainability—through specific programs and initiatives that are determined by regional needs and cultures.
In the Asia-Pacific Region, financial and other contributions support educational excellence, infrastructure improvements and health and social services.
Wo Long Elementary School
To expand upon the relationship established with this Beijing school more than five years ago, Rohm and Haas China collaborated with one of its major customers, Motian Paint, to refurbish the facility. Using Rohm and Haas materials, Motian repainted the buildings. Under the supervision of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and local governmental officials, the company also donated more than 200,000 yuan ($24,000) in teaching aids and materials to the school.
East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST)
In Shanghai, China, Rohm and Haas established a scholarship program at East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), which awards 100,000 yuan ($12,000 USD) to students each year to foster the education of elite professionals for the chemical industry. Rohm and Haas has also provided special contributions to the university’s athletics program and its e-center translations program, and has donated floor care products for the gymnasium.
Tsinghua University
In partnership with Tsinghua University's Department of Chemical Engineering, Rohm and Haas China Inc. has made a multi-year commitment to sponsor a number of sports leagues to enhance the extracurricular activities for the chemical engineering students. Soccer, basketball and other sports teams will be established so students can play, exercise and compete.
Hope Project
In November 2002, to recognize the 30th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic ties between Japan and China, Rodel Nitta, K.K., a Japanese subsidiary of Rohm and Haas, donated $28,000 USD to the Hope Project in the Henan Queshan region of China. The contribution was designated for construction of an elementary school in the mountains of western China. In his presentation of the contribution, Rodel Nitta President Katsunori Aoki cited his company’s eagerness to promote education and the development of lucrative trade and business relations with Chinese officials.
Terry Fox Run
The Terry Fox Run, named in honour of Canadian amputee runner Terry Fox who at 21, attempted to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research, is no longer just a Canadian tradition. Countries around the world stage annual events in support of Terry's dream of finding a cure for cancer. Nearly all the money raised is remitted to institutions accredited by the International Union Against Cancer in Geneva. International Run locations are organized by Canadian Embassies/Consulates, Canadian Forces Bases, Anti-Cancer Councils and Societies as well as other dedicated organizations and individuals. Every year, more than 50 countries do their part for cancer research.

Deakin University and Newcomb Secondary College
Rohm and Haas in Geelong Australia is investing in the scientists of tomorrow. A long time supporter of the Deakin University's Chem on Campus program, Rohm and Haas contributions make possible an advanced chemistry course for year 11 students of the Geelong region. The students who participate attend weekly sessions at Deakin and a week of practical experiments during the school holidays immersing the students in science and university life.
For over eight years, Rohm and Haas in Geelong has partnered with Newcomb Secondary College to encourage the scientists of tomorrow. In addition to financial support making possible the purchase of science equipment for the school, the Company annually hosts students at its agri-forest where they measure and monitor this environmental initiative and see the waste water management process in action.
Children’s Cancer Institute of Australia
For many years, Rohm and Haas Australia Pty. Ltd. has supported cancer research and treatment for children through annual donations.
United Way (Geelong)
Each year the employees at Geelong, Australia get together to raise a cash contribution to support the local United Way. These annual contribution provides unrestricted support for health and human services in the Geelong community. Employees raised $8,000 over a three year period.
