Arbor Day
To commemorate Arbor Day, employees at the Rohm and Haas facility in New Germany, South Africa were invited to assist during the launch of a new project to preserve and return indigenous trees, plants and other wildlife to the 20-acre site. Under the ongoing supervision of a prominent local conservationist, non-indigenous plant life was removed and replaced with the area’s natural vegetation. The trees and shrubbery now flourish, and are home to more than 100 species of birds, a large troop of Vervet monkeys, banded mongooses and a Monitor lizard. A forest trail within the site offers employees, local students, educators and community residents the opportunity to learn how indigenous plant-life helps maintain the natural ecosystem. |
Recycling Project
Through a project organized by Rohm and Haas Jarrow and a recycling service center, Groundwork South Tyneside, nearly two dozen students from St. Peter’s Primary School learned the benefits and importance of recycling. The program included a half-day visit to the recycling center, a poster and caption competition and a visit to the laboratories at the Jarrow facility. The children later completed a special recycling project at their school, which they presented to Rohm and Haas staff.
