Reduced Abuse Formulations

Certain drugs are either intentionally or unintentionally abused to some degree and this can be a life-threatening incident.  Perhaps the best known type of deliberate abuse is that linked to the opiate family of products with the recent deaths linked to OxyContin (TM) in the US being a tragic example.  However, unintentional abuse such as the chewing of sustained release formulation is another potential lethal example.

Recent research work performed in the US has highlighted  a way in which functional polymers, either used alone or in conjunction with other technologies, could significantly reduce the potential for abuse within formulation development without major adverse effects of drug availability or release profile.

Ion Exchange Resins in Drug Delivery

Abstract: Ion exchange resins have been used commercially in drug delivery for many years, but the technology is not widely known within the healthcare and related industries. This presentation will describe the uses of these materials for extended release, taste masking and reduce abuse formulations. In addition to covering their use in existing commercial applications it will also include new insights into their use that provide new opportunities to control the release of active ingredients.
