Bicarbonate hardness is very efficiently removed from water with a weakly acidic cation (WAC) exchange resin. The so-called permanent hardness, usually a much smaller quantity, is left in the water and prevents corrosion. Additionally, most heavy metals such as lead and copper are removed in the process.

 

Ion exchange columns of the simplest type, with co-flow regeneration is all you need.
